Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Discover an effective approach to healing and mental health support.

This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.

Mental health issues range from anxiety, mood, and substance use disorders to trauma, chemical imbalances, and psychosis. There is a greater understanding of and compassion for mental health and wellness today than at any other time in history; the stigma once associated with it is far less pervasive than even a few years ago. The desire to get people the help they need so they can lead full, productive lives has reached a level of paramount importance at home, work and in school because the dialogue and treatment have evolved. Mental health issues affect a greater number of people than once thought and this awareness has been a significant factor in seeing more people getting the treatment they need sooner, instead of suffering alone or in silence.

Integrative treatment that works

When someone experiences a mental illness and a substance use disorder at the same time, it is called Dual Diagnosis. Also referred to as Co-Occurring Disorders, either can develop first. Research shows that alcohol and drugs exacerbate the symptoms of mental illness and people who have these issues often turn to drugs or alcohol as a form of self-medication in an effort to “improve” the symptoms they experience. Because of the different cultures related to mental health treatment and substance use recovery, dual diagnosis treatment is highly specific. Effective care addresses all issues simultaneously as each condition affects the other.

In a nutshell, dual diagnosis treatment is only as effective as it is individualized. At 1 Method, our philosophy is that individual problems need to be treated in individual ways. Committed to this philosophy, we provide the right care in the right way at the right time.

Living with an addiction AND mental health issues ISN’T EASY

We recognize that addiction and mental health issues go hand in hand. Simultaneously having an addiction and mental health struggles can seem burdensome or even hopeless. When it comes to getting a proper diagnosis , it can be evasive. Despite this, we know it can be done. Most importantly, it’s critical to get the right care.

1 Method offers dual diagnosis treatment based on an integrative clinical model. This includes, but isn’t limited to: detoxification, 1-on-1 therapy, group therapy, evidence-based treatments (psychiatry, mental health assessments, medication management., etc.) and a variety of holistic services. Because of our experience with dual diagnosis treatment, we know how to help you achieve a full recovery so you can lead a productive, fulfilling life.

Choosing a program is very personal. If you’re unsure whether our approach to treating dual diagnosis is right for you – don’t worry. Simply call us with any questions or send us a message. We are here to listen and help.

EFFECTIVE Treatment Plans

1 Method Center has created a compassionate, yet robust therapeutic setting that supports the complex needs of those with a dual diagnosis. We recognize your distinct needs and treat them accordingly. We incorporate a diverse range of strategies and individual treatment planning to untangle these co-occurring elements, and alleviate the difficulty of living with untreated dual diagnosis. Having a treatment plan that addresses your individual needs will help you achieve greater insight as you move towards a healthy and full recovery

Comprehensive Exit Planning

We dedicate a good portion of your time in treatment to making sure you have the right tools to reenter the world healthier so you can thrive in society. In our view, a strong, personalized exit plan is critical to this goal. However long your stay with us at 1 Method is, a comprehensive exit plan is developed with your personal therapist, case manager and clinical team to address: living arrangements, support system, triggers, relapse prevention, safety plans, aftercare structure, therapy, medical care, and next steps towards areas of life such as career, family, school, and recreation. This emphasis on planning for a safe transition from treatment gives you the best chance to handle the challenges ahead.

Our Treatment Approach

Though clinical plans are not the same for everyone, proven treatment methods for dual diagnosis often begin with inpatient detoxification to reduce withdrawal effects. This helps us determine what mental health issues are present and whether they are related or unrelated to substance misuse. Once a safe detox has been achieved, evidence-based services (psychiatry, mental health evaluations, medication management., etc.) are introduced and complemented by our holistic approach, healthy food, and health and fitness program. Each of these components is provided in conjunction with 1-on-1 therapies, group therapy and a wide range of targeted treatments. Coupled with our calm, tranquil environment, these aspects work synergistically to foster recovery, healing and success.

The 1 Method Center Difference

Many people view dual diagnosis rehab as a revolving door of success and setbacks until treatment starts again. That doesn’t have to be your story. But it is critical to get the right care to help break that cycle. 1 Method Center is dedicated to giving you that care.

We know you can recover for good. This perspective is demonstrated in every part of our program. From our tranquil setting in Southern California, to our integrated clinical model, to our experienced staff and specialized health programs, we’re confident you can have a life-changing experience at 1 Method Center.

Your body craves physical health. Your mind needs mental health. We help you start exercising both.

Nobody is perfect. It takes years of practice and dedication to become as physically fit as an elite athlete. Most of us are amateurs. We often go for long stretches of time attempting to change our physical bodies before realizing that we haven’t paid attention to our mental health needs and would benefit from having some help that changes our minds. With addiction, the brain becomes a relentless coach that demands physical cravings be met. Once those cravings and addictions are challenged head on, the mind requires a program that strengthens its ability to exercise its potential, overcome adversity and become a strong, dedicated advocate for your well-being. The brain is the most powerful organ and tool at your disposal. Your mental health is driven and motivated by it.

1 Method recognizes that the brain is equally capable of sabotaging or damaging the human spirit as it is of healing it and sometimes it can take you off course. But the brain is also wired to change, learn new routes and expand its knowledge and understanding of the human experience and how it operates to steer you in a more positive direction. We get you on the right track so you can forge your path to a better, renewed you.

Our approach to mental health is personal. We focus on helping you unearth and examine your underlying problems; mental health and wellness are a journey as well as a destination. We believe that individual problems need to be treated in individual ways. We start with you.

If you are looking to be treated as an individual and not a number, call us with any questions or send us a message. We are here to listen and help.

In many cases, a mental health disorder predates the development of a substance use disorder; in other circumstances, addiction becomes an issue first and mental health symptoms are not apparent until later – and sometimes, they can be triggered or worsened by drug use. Everyone is different and there is no one cause for any of these problems. However, living with a mental health disorder may increase the likelihood of developing an addiction – and vice versa.

In most cases, a host of issues contribute to developing addiction and/or mental health disorders. These may include, but aren’t limited to:

Trauma: Violence, sexual abuse or physical abuse, divorce, loss, natural disaster, combat experiences can contribute to mental illness and using alcohol or drugs. This is usually as a means to cope with the flashbacks, memories, sleep issues, and the many other complications that can result from trauma.

Biology: Neuroscience has come to recognize that some people are just wired for susceptibility to these issues. They’re inherently attracted to the high created by drug and alcohol use. This may be due to alterations in their brain-reward circuitry, prenatal development, childhood exposures, an accident, illness, or any number of possible things that can – even slightly – change brain chemistry and function. Science has yet to find “the one” biological constant that results in developing these conditions.

Genetics: If you have a close relative with a mental health disorder, your chances of developing the same, or a similar mental health issue are higher. Similarly, having a close relative who has struggled – past or present – with a substance use disorder increases the likelihood of developing a problem.

Culture: If the setting you grew up in or sought out – home, neighborhood, city, or otherwise – was promoting or permissive of drug use, that can contribute to the onset of substance abuse and mental health issues.

Environment: More than most, your family system plays a part in the development of SUD and mental health disorders. What was going on in the home, how much attention was paid, the strength of relationships, attachments, and connections, how issues were addressed, what disciplines were used, what nurturing and communication took place; These are all pieces of the puzzle. However, it is very important to realize this does NOT mean addiction and mental illness are the fault of the family. People develop these issues even in the healthiest, most loving family environments.

Life Experience: The ongoing use of certain drugs and alcohol in high amounts as well as other significant life experiences, like developing a chronic illness, divorce, and suffering a loss also contributes to the development of mental health disorders.

Life can be overwhelming and even the best of us can reach an impasse and get stuck. Everyone has a story that needs to be told. We are here to help you tell yours.

In a world of labels that so often define us, sometimes, we are just looking for answers and a proper diagnosis that comes with a name. Regardless if it is PTSD, depression, anxiety, stress or a host of other psychological issues, the struggle is real because it’s yours. It can be confusing, daunting and even frightening. Identifying what it’s not is equally as important as identifying what in fact it is and determining how best to treat it. Matters of an emotional and psychological nature present themselves differently in people. There is no magic wand that can be waved or single treatment that can be applied across the board. This is why it is crucial to seek out an experienced treatment center that focuses on the individual and treats individual problems in individual ways. At 1 Method Center, it’s not only our philosophy, it’s what we do, with every single client, every single day.

Whether your issues are new or recurring, searching for a program that respects your story, boundaries, and challenges is as imperative as finding one that understands how to approach them in an effective way. The care you experience must be designed to give you an improved outlook on life to help facilitate positive results and lasting change. We don’t try to fit square pegs into round holes. Instead, we employ focused therapy that identifies, targets and then treats your core issues. This is an important aspect of 1 Method’s philosophy. It makes all the difference in the world when treating emotional and psychological issues. 1 Method is well versed in treating complex emotional and psychological issues and concerns and have a completion rate that makes us proud of our work. We hope you find your way here.
